The 2017 Big Rock Plowing Match auction featured the first Quilt Challenge as a fundraiser for the Ladies Fair. It was a wonderful success. Congratulations to our quilters, Sheila Juvingo-first place and Wilma Shimkus-second place for their creative interpretation of the Big Rock Plowing Match. Their beautiful mini-quilts were sold at the auction bringing in $530. We thank Janis Baie who had the winning bid for both of the mini-quilts.
Looking ahead we are very excited to announce the 2018 theme for our second quilt challenge: the Big Rock Plowing Match Vegetable & Grain Show. Quilters are invited to depict the many facets of this harvest time event and use their imagination to interpret the theme in a mini quilt. Finished size must be 24” x 24” with a rod pocket on back for hanging. May be quilted or pieced by hand or machine. More points if hand quilted. There are so many possibilities. Need inspiration? Check out the photos included in previous issues of Plowing Match Times on our website www.bigrockplowingmatch.com
The first place quilter will receive $100 and second place $50. Both quilts will be sold at auction. The auction of baked goods and the mini-quilts is the Association’s primary fundraiser with all proceeds supporting the Plowing Match events as well as maintaining the buildings and grounds.
The countdown is on for the 124th Big Rock Plowing Match the weekend of September 14-16, 2018. The auction will be on Saturday, September 15 beginning at 1:00 pm with the Junior Fair prize-winning baked goods, followed by the Ladies Fair baked goods, with the mini-quilts to be auctioned at 2:00 pm.
